Board Member

Bert Johnson is currently serving as Councillor for the Township of Terrace Bay and is in his sixth year of public service as Councillor.  As part of that role, Bert sits on the Accessibility, Supportive Housing, Thunder Bay District Municipal League and Hand-Transit Committees for the Township.

Mr. Johnson is retired from Bowater (Great Lakes Paper, etc.)  in 2006 following a successful career as Scaler, which included two short stints as Cut Foreman, in the bush for 30+ years.  Bert is no stranger to public service as while employed by Bowater, he served sixteen (16) years as Chair of the Upsala District School Area Board.  During that time, he also represented all of the isolate School Boards in Ontario and all of the Public School Boards west of Thunder at the Northwestern Ontario School Trustees’ Association (NOSTA).  While serving in that capacity, Bert was once awarded recognition as the Outstanding Trustee in Northern Ontario.

In addition to his passion for representing Northwestern Ontario constituents at the district school board and municipal levels, he is also an avid outdoorsman.  Bert has a passion for introducing and mentoring others into the joys of the outdoors and worked for many years at the D&R Sporting Goods store.  Bert also served in a volunteer capacity with the Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance and was awarded “Outstanding Sportsman” in 2011.

Throughout his career, Bert has been dedicated to giving back to his community in the form of volunteering on various committees and boards.  Some of those additional volunteer positions include:

  • Upsala District School Area Board
  • Northern Ontario School Trustees’ Association during tenure with the school board
  • Northwestern Ontario Sportsmen’s Alliance
  • Thunder Bay Forest Planning
  • Dog River Mattawan Forest
  • Thunder Bay District Stewardship Council and currently sits on
  • Terrace Bay Ducks Unlimited Committee.

Bert is retired and living in Terrace Bay with his best friend and wife Gail of forty-five (45) years.
